Re: Dynamic Server versus Universal Server ??

What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell so sweet. But --- Universal Server was a name coined by the in"for"mous marketing department. It was a dialect of IDS which is now incorporated into IDS version 9. And other names for IDS include Informix Internet Foundation 2000. Only a marketeer could have earned money by coing that catchy little number. I agree names dont matter. But I'm finding the Informix documentation is driving me crazy. Different manuals for the same things, different names for the same products. Too many ways of doing the same thing ( consider backups, on bar, on tape, on archive etc ). It almost makes microsoft Sql Server look like a very good product. Jack,
IDS (Informix Dynamic Server) is any version of Informix past version 6.0.
XPS (8.x) is a superset of IDS because it extends the IDS server into a
multi-node server. Universal Server is an extension of IDS because it adds
the support of user defined data types to the IDS server. So while all
Universal Servers are IDS, not all IDS are Universal Servers.
Concerning backups --- ontape, onbar, and onarchive are all client tools
that invoke the backup/restore facility within the engine. The oldest is
ontape which is the version 5 backup utility. It does not support storage
managers and does not lend itself to unattended backups. Onarchive is a
dead product. It was an attempt to provide some unattended backup facility.
But because of the complexity of using onarchive, we had a lot of pressure
to replace it. Also, we needed to interface with storage managers that were
being developed in the 1990's. onbar is the backup tool that replaced
onarchive and interfaces with commercial storage managers.
We could not decommission ontape because that would require all customers
adapt to using a storage manager, so we still support ontape. Also, for
smaller systems, ontape has proven to be a very useful backup tool.
