Servers compatible to our current Informix tools &
Posted in 2013
User sought to migrate from aging DEC Alpha Server with Informix SE 7.32 on Tru64 UNIX to compatible new hardware without upgrading software. Experts advised that direct hardware compatibility is impractical—DEC/Compaq/HP Alpha hardware is expensive and Tru64 support ended 12/31/2012. They recommended upgrading to newer Informix Dynamic Server versions on Linux/Intel, noting all data and code are portable.

Dear Gurus, We are currently used a DEC Alpha Server 800 5/333 which stores our application and the following informix tools: 1. Informix SE 7.32 2. INFORMIX-SQL7.32.FC2. 3. DB-Access V7.25.FC6 4. INFORMIX-4GL V7.32.FC2 And the operating system is Tru64 UNIX 5.1B. The server is very old (more than 15 years), small and near its capacity (50GB). So we are looking for a new server with much more capacity but compatible with the current Informix tools and the OS so that we just copy over all the stuff from the old server to the new one without getting a consultant to do the conversion. Any suggestions ? Truly yours, Long Nguyen Transplant System Analyst Australian Blood Service.
Hello. Really? If you want a migration to a newer version, in order to enable Informix newest features, which are enormous compared to what you actually have, you cannot just "copy and paste". Remember that you have an old box, with an old OS, and old hardware, and an old Informix version. You should spend some money, to have a much better system, with less than you think. More features, in our case, doesn´t require too much budget, as in other RDBMS in the market. It will mostly depends what do you expect in terms of throughput, concurrent sessions, and storage. Our actual Informix version can attend you in a wide range of systems, from very little ones, to the biggest you´ve ever heard. You might contact one local IBM partner, he should be able to help you in this. If you have any specific doubt, we are able to help, anytime. It´s time for you to step forward. Hope it helps. So, here's the full story in bullet points: - DEC is long gone, merged with Compaq which was swallowed up by HP. - HP still makes Alpha servers, but you will pay handsomely for one and an Intel based Linux box will probably perform as well and MUCH better than you antiquity you have now for much less $$$$. - Dbaccess is included with all versions of the Informix database, so you will get an upgrade free when you get Informix for your new machine. - You can stick to SE or you can upgrade to Dynamic Server v11.70 or v12.10. I'd go with Dynamic Server myself. - 4GL: IBM has cash cow'd 4GL. You can still get it but no new features, etc. There are three alternatives: 1. IBM/4Js Genero 2. Querix Lycia 3. Aubit 4GL (open source) - Licensing Genero will cost a little more than relicensing 4GL, Lycia will be a bit less expensive than 4GL, and Aubit 4GL is free. - IBM still sells Informix-SQL if you are using ISQL forms and reports, but there is an open source alternative that is written in 4GL so you can compile that using any of the four 4GL choices if you don't want to go with IBM's ISQL. - As for the database engine, Informix Dynamic Server is a faster more feature rich server than SE and you could probably get away with Express Edition or Workgroup Edition. Express Edition is limited to 4 CPU Virtual Processors and 8GB of memory with no limit on storage. Workgroup Edition permits up to 16 CPU Virtual Processors and 16GB of memory also with unlimited storage. There are feature limitations in both, but either will still be more feature rich and perform better than SE. Art Art S. Oh, all of your data and all of your 4GL and ISQL code and dbaccess scripts
will be fully portable from SE to the new system regardless of what choices
you make.

Even if you could migrate to Tru64 compatible hardware, you wont be able to acquire licensed copies of 7.32. Tru64 UNIX 5.1B-6 support also ended on 12/31/2012, so an alternative to converting to a newer version of Informix and *nix could be to run what you have within virtualization on newer hardware.
Thanks Art and Paul.
Cheers.
