Assuming you work on UNIX and have a shell with job control...
So, you have a foreground job running. Try to press Ctrl+Z - it should be
stopped (suspended),
you'll get a string with job number (in square brackets, if I remember
well). Use bg #
(or bg %# - it depends on shell) command to make it work in the background
mode. Use jobs -l
command to get a list of you current jobs.
