The root-owned threads are daemon or page cleaner threads (D or F in
the last flag position). This suggests that IDS was started as user
root instead of informix. While I have heard varying opinions on
whether this is acceptable, it may be that user root is restricted at
the kernel level which would be why you see threads hang.
The Y--P--- flags mean the thread is waiting on a condition. The
S--P--D flags mean a daemon is waiting on a mutex. If you do not know
how to compare onstats to find out what these threads are waiting on,
I highly recommend The onstat Quick Reference Guide, available online
at: http://www.iiug.org/markscranton/informix/IDS_BUNDLE/documents/everything_onstat.zip

I cannot address this, as I have never seen such a thing.
If you suspect that 50 sessions is the key, then try increasing the
values of NETTYPE in the onconfig. It should not hurt, and it might
help. Unfortunately, at this point, it's still a stab in the dark.

Well I know about the flags and I can RTFM :-) but the problem is that when the machine hangs, the threads are not waiting for anything, that's why I don't know what else to look for. > > at: http://www.iiug.org/markscranton/informix/IDS_BUNDLE/documents/everything_onstat.zip > This is a nice document - has anyone managed to make it display under Unix/Linux? Unfortunately, at this point, it's still a stab in the dark. Yes, I'll try that as soon as we have some low traffic period, thanks. --Micha
