Drop Index

Dear All, Is there anyways to speed up the drop index action? I have an index which is no longer used and want to drop it but it took me more than 4 hours. Does the lock table exculsive command help?? Thanks in advance Franklin

Doesn't a drop index command lock the table exclusively anyway? The dropping of detached indexes is almost instantaneous because the index "data" does not have physically to be deleted: just the pointers to the tablespace(s) removed.. But with attached indexes, which I believe was the default before v9, the deletion process needs to trawl through the combined data and index tablespaces and physically remove the index data.
