RE: Ontape archiving to disk

Scott,
If your archives are < 2Gb, you can simply set your TAPEDEV parameter to a
filepath, and run your ontape -s. The target file must already exist,
owner/group = informix/informix, permissions 660. Restores will work just
fine when you pull the archive from the TAPEDEV filepath, too. What we
usually do is make the TAPEDEV filepath a soft link to a date-stamped file,
so that one archive does not overwrite the previous one. Of course, you can
accomplish the same thing by mv'ing the TAPEDEV file after each archive, and
then re-creating the TAPEDEV filepath for the next archive.
If your archives exceed 2Gb, then it becomes a little more complicated. For
almost all of our >2Gb archives, we use "expect" to spawn and monitor an
archive session. When the archive "tape" is full (be sure to set TAPESIZE
to 2000000) and ontape requests another tape, the expect script is set up to
unlink the TAPEDEV file from the current date-stamped sequentially-numbered
file, increment the sequential counter, and link the TAPEDEV file to the new
date-stamped sequentially-numbered file. Those files can then get backed-up
by the network backup software.
Many other schemes have been discussed in C.D.I. (look in
http://www.dejanews.com), and several very good utility programs are
available in the IIUG Software Repository (http://www.iiug.org).
Since you are on 7.3, have you considered using the new ISM tool? I haven't
used it myself yet (most of our servers are still on 7.2x), but I believe
that it can archive to disk, and it may be simplest way to go, especially
for archives >2Gb.
