Multiple databases in Perform
Posted in 1995
A couple weeks ago I wrote:
Is there any way to do a lookup to a different database in a Perform
screen? I have tried numerous ways with most of them involving
following the 2nd database with a colon (y:table.column). Since
I can do it in Ace I thought there had to be a way in Perform.
I'm using 4.1 and 5.0 online.
To which I got a direct reply from Jonathan Leffler:
No direct way -- create an synonym in the database for the
remote table and it should work.
To which I replied directly to him thanking him profusely for such
a simple and elegant solution.
Again, Jonathan replied directly:
Glad to be of some assistance.
Thinking about it some more, you may be able to do:
TABLES
localalias = somedb@someserver:'someuser'.sometable
...
ATTRIBUTES
f000 = localalias.somecolumn, ...;
That is, you may not need to create a permanent synonym in the database.
I don't think there's a way to control the display attributes of
the subject of a LOOKUP clause.

So now that I have you all on the edge of your seats, here is the
new problem.
I created the synonym and my lookup ran great.
DATABASE student;
CREATE SYNONYM sn FOR gradsch:studname
But, when I do my backup via cron I also check the integerity of
my databases;
tbcheck -cI -cD -q student

I know I need to do something about the 8 tables that have more
than 8 extents although opinions on this bulletin board seems
mixed.
