Re: Informix DSA with 1 processor

Anna, I have to agree with Mike Ballentine on this one - Our original setup was as follows: Data General Aviion computer (2x Motorola CPUs): 128MB. Informix Online 5 2GB Production Database. Performance during the day for OLTP users - OK - Starting to go slow due to database table sizes. Performance during the evening batch - Taking extremely long time - esp. indexing and inserts. --------- New Configuration: Data General Aviion as above. Informix 7.13 2GB Production Database. Performance during the day for OLTP users - Terrible! Performance during the evening batch run - SLIGHTLY improved. --------- Personally, I believe that with less than 40 users and a small machine, you will probably be better off using Online 5. Especially with more than 2 interactive (OLTP) users. We were able to make v7 marginally better than v5 after very many sleepless nights! It offers increased DBA tools and tuning options. We tried data-replication to a second machine for our read-only users, however this failed to be reliable. (It must be said that at the time our hardware was terribly inadequate). ---------- We found that turning PDQ off (Parallel Data Query option) solved the daytime problem. The evening runs were marginally improved too. (v7 has extra features to improve batch performance - reindexing etc). Problems stem from allocation of resource. We found under our Online 7 setup that too much time-slice was being given to a single user. Therefore all other users came to a halt! This became a severe problem with graphical data-query users. ---------- We found the best option was a daytime config, and then a reboot for a night-time (batch PDQ) config. to be our best answer. This should overcome v7 problems. You may find that setting PDQ on, and setting each user for PDQ of 0 (off) during the day, allowing only the batches to run with PDQ greater than zero is the best solution - This assumes you run your batches one after the other when there are no users on the system. -------- John.
