memory fault with su - informix
Posted in 1999
On HP-UX, 'su - informix' from root died with a memory fault (plain 'su informix' worked), and oninit failed with a "cannot find message file, check INFORMIXDIR and DBLANG" error despite INFORMIXDIR being set. Replies pointed out that the only difference with 'su -' is that /etc/profile and the user's .profile are run, so something in those scripts was likely at fault; suggestions were to source each file manually, add 'set -x' to .profile to trace it, check INFORMIXSERVER/ONCONFIG, and (from one poster who had seen the same HP-UX crash) clear the user's shell history file. The poster never reported back, so no confirmed resolution is recorded.

Greetings,
Shooting this message to the hpux & informix group, in case the problems
are related. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I have a critical user account ( my informix dba account) that gives me
a memory fault when I try su - informix (from root) if I just run, su
informix I get in. ?!?
I can use su - with other users with no problem.
For anyone who may be familiar with IDS 7.x:
Although I still have errors bringing up the IDS database engine. When I
run oninit, I get the error can not find message file, check INFORMIXDIR
and DBLANG
INFORMIXDIR is set correctly. What is DBLANG? can not even find the
definition of the variable in my Informix docs.
Any ideas on how to fix and if the two problems are related?
Thanks,
Is user informix part of group informix? That may answer questions
about bringing up IDS.

Thanks for your response.
Yes informix is a member of the group informix. It is strange, as I have been
able to bring up IDS before with no problem.

The only difference between su and su - is that the latter runs /etc/profile and
the user's profile. You may have something in there
that is causing the failure.

How about INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG these are also important for the
session that will be starting the engine.

There's something wrong in either /etc/profile, or in the .profile for
user-id informix.
Try su informix, then source /etc/profile then .profile in turn until you
discover the problem.

Pretty basic debugging can be used.
At the beginning of your .profile, put "set -x" which will then cause
each command to be displayed as it is executed. (I assume you are using
sh or ksh). You should then see where the problem is.
Mike,
I have seen a similar problem on hp/ux 10, hp/ux 11, and other Unix(s)
(Sequent, and Sun). Clear the shell history for the user, and see if the
problem goes away.
Make a copy of the shell history file first. if you have hp support, and if
this fixes the problem, please open a ticket with hp... maybe someone will
fix this some day :-)
