The author translates the billboard's message as saying that Informix beat Oracle to market with a new technology called "DataBlades" and the broken samurai sword symbolizes a DataBlade, while poking fun at Oracle CEO Larry Ellison's interest in Asian art. B1, staff reporter) DATABASED ADVISOR "The Universal Server revolution, part II" The second in a two-part series, this article discusses INFORMIX-Universal Server, DataBlade modules and the INFORMIX-Universal Web Architecture. Peter Kastner, an analyst at Aberdeen Group notes, "IBM had searchable audio and video a year ago; Oracle was the early leader in searchable text. But when all is said and done, Informix has delivered something the customer can use today." He also notes that customers aren't just buying one DataBlade, but are instead buying multiple DataBlades and linking them together. "I recently came back from a training class on Universal Server and it was very stable," said Nancy Mlymec, project manager at GDE Systems. "I was actually surprised at the stability." (3/97, pg. 62, Heather Zeigler and Patrice Hartmann) PC WEEK "FastStart: one-stop data shop" Informix has announced a new bundling program that will give users a one-stop shop for data warehousing products. "The bundles will be beneficial for companies that want to have someone give them a turnkey solution that includes both tools and services," said Mike Nelson, general manager at Concept Dynamic, Inc., an application development company and Informix reseller. Informix will also include service and consulting to build data warehouse prototypes. "The value of the Informix bundle is that they will help you select the best components for your environment and provide consulting to pull it all together," said Wayne Eckerson, an analyst with Patricia Seybold Group. (2/24/97, pg. 62, Juan Perez) INFOWORLD ONLINE "Angoss' data mining tool offered as extension to Informix database" Angoss Software plans to roll out a version of its KnowledgeSeeker data mining tool implemented as an Informix DataBlade to INFORMIX-Universal Server. The product is expected to ship within several weeks. (2/24/97, online, staff writer) C/NET "Informix said to "outperform"" Informix was downgraded by Smith Barney to "outperform" from "buy." Andrew Roskill of Smith Barney said Informix is well positioned in the industry, but improved year earnings per share growth are not likely until the second-half of 1997.
