Here are two things you did not mention in your post: 1) Application tuning. Are there tables or rows being locked by users? What is the default locking level? What is your isolation level? Historically, most performance gains can be found in the application itself. 2) Memory usage. Is your machine paging or swapping excessively? You may use onperf (detailed in the book "Informix-OnLine Dynamic Server Performance Guide) or your operating system's memory management commands to find out.
