ESQL/C - Determining SERIAL value after INSERT

How do I determine the serial number assigned to my newly inserted record using ESQL/C and without using the sqlca structure? I know how to check sqlerrd[1] for the serial value when using the sqlca strcuture for exception handling. Informix, however, recommend using the SQLSTATE method since that is more portable and compliant with standards. So, using SQLSTATE how do I get back the same information?
