Backup Terminology
Posted in 2005
I have just discovered the following
"Level 0 - Performs a complete backup of all items chosen in the
Selections tab (also referred to as a Full backup).
Level 1 - Backs up any changes made to selected data since the last
backup. This level of backup will truncate selected items (i.e., this
is
the same as an Informix Incremental, Normal backup).
Level 2 - Similar to a Level 1 backup, except that no truncating will
occur (same as an Informix Incremental, No Truncate backup)."
This is in the documentation of the BakBone NetVault storage manager
which also refers to backing up databases, logs within databases, and
backing up tablespaces using onbar. In other words the techncal writer
has tried (in vain) to equate the way IDS works with the Oracle
terminology.
I dread to think how a DBA is supposed to make sense out of this.
I now have the dubious honour of trying to educate DBAs on how they
should implement this software combination.
