Tables live in dbspaces, and each dbspace consists of one or more chunks. You specify which dbspace a table goes in the CREATE TABLE statement. This gives you a lot of flexibility as to how you can lay out your disks. So, a simple example: if you wanted to have table 1 on disk 1 and table 2 on disk 2, you'd set up 2 dbspaces of one chunk each, one on each disk and create each table in a different dbspace. If you had a single large table that you wanted to spread over drives, you'd create its dbspace with several chunks on different drives. By configuring lots of chunks in specific physical positions on disks, you can do clever things like keep the most frequently-used tables together near the centre of a disk, or stripe tables across disks, but note that in pre-6.00 OnLine has to be able to fit all the chunk information, including pathnames, on a single (usually 2k) page. When you design your physical placement, for the best load balance, don't forget to take account of logical log and temp table activity. akent@cix.compulink.co.uk (Andy Kent) -------------------------------------
