I've been consulting on RDBMS for considerably long period of time and I've heard lot of clients complaining about the detoriation in performance when migrating from one version to another- especially to V7 from V5 of Informix. We should remember that there is a considerable architectural change in V7 over V5. This has resulted is several enhancements (or is it that the enhancement warranted significant architectural changes?) all for providing designers with better control of the engine. Naturally there is a cost attached. In most cases maintaining V5 environment under V7 is bound to display poor performance. However this should not deter you from migrating to higher version. Just note the performance in the current environment, satisfy the requirements of V7 and move the application.You are bound to get better control of the environment and certainly similar performance if not better.
