My suggestion then would be:
1) As the db server goes up then I assume the sqlhosts files on the
server is fine. However, check the sqlhosts file on the
client......to see if for any strange reason it has some special
characters .....so you open it up with vi then you use set list command
to see any special characters in the file.
2) I would check with a sniffer how the tcp connection goes out from the
client ( I assume you have this problem only from one client). Is it
trying to go to the servername:15038 ?
3) try to connect from any other clients to ensure that the problem is
not on the db server (I think you did this before though).
