DBDATE (was: Informix 4.1 inquiry)

Is that "period", or does
the "." belong to "DBDATE"?
In the age of GLS, why is DBDATE still necessary? When I upgraded to
7.20 frontends and IDS 7.30, I assumed that the GLS settings would take
care of the date formats. However, I was wrong, and I still have to set
DBDATE=DMY4. to get the correct German format for dates, even though Ihave set CLIENT_LOCALE=de_de.8859-1
