This is what I had to find out the hard way, too. The "official" Informix information and also this newsgroup always told me that version 4/5 front- ends could ONLY talk to version 7/9 backends via the relay module and that a significant performance penalty was involved. This has kept me from upgrading from Online 5.x to newer versions for several years, since I just didn't have the resources for upgrading my programs and the database server at the same time, which seemed a necessity. Now I've found out that my old programs run just fine against the new 7.30 server over the network. > Then once all apps have been recompiled and > torture tested in production against the 5.xx engine the upgrade to > 9.xx will be painless, at least from the application point of view, > since the recompiled apps will have already been tested and verified. > > This is the upgrade method I use and recommend. I'll do the exact opposite: First migrate the server and the clients thereafter. I'm forced to do this because I need a supported way of backup up my databases with Legato Networker, and that's available only for newer 7.x versions of Informix Online/Dynamic Server. From my limited experience so far, the server migration is rather painless and quick, while migration and testing of the client applications will most likely take considerably more time.
