Problem while taking backup
Posted in 2007
An IDS 7.31 user reported that nightly 'ontape -s -L 0' level-0 backups, previously taking 15-20 minutes, had stopped completing after inserting about a million rows and rebuilding a table; the archive stalled before reaching 100MB. Respondents asked about TAPEDEV/LTAPEDEV settings (disk file paths here), the 2GB file limit, environment variables, online log messages, checkpoint durations, 'onstat -g arc -r 1' scanner progress, and whether tar to the same directory worked. The poster said tar worked, logical log backups worked, and no errors appeared. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hi
We are using IDS 7.31
I used to take 0 level backup using ontape everyday it used to take 15-20
minutes only
But now for last one week backup is not happening.
Last week we have inserted some 10lakh records after that we have rebuilded
the table
But still not able to take ontape backup. Its taking lot of time and not
completing the backup.
What could be the reason?
Pls help
Regards
suresh
Hi,
How do you take your backup ?
On disk, on tape ?
You probably pass the 2 Gb limit ?

Are checkpoints getting longer during backup ?
Is there an activity going on during backup ?

hi
I take it manually using ontape -s -L 0
its not even crossing 100MB.
Hi No activity is going on. I kill the backup process after waitinf for 10 -15 mins
Hi,
Ok you take it manually, but where is it going to ?
(TAPEDEV and LTAPEDEV in your ONCONFIG_file)
If you take it manually, are your variables INFORMIXDIR, INFORMIXSERVER
and ONCONFIG
Correctly set ?
Any messages in your logfile ? (find logfile with : grep MSG
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG)
Messages such as :
12:30:08 Level 0 Archive started on rootdbs, jpa, logspace
12:35:35 Checkpoint Completed: duration was 0 seconds.
12:41:41 Archive on rootdbs, jpa, logspace Completed.

Hi all the parameters are properly set its not showing any error Its taking long time now than before After waiting for some time im killing the process
What about the message log file, is there anything usual, errors/
checkpoint duration?
If you do a file system backup to the tape drive, say of a 4G data how
does it behave ?
If you do onstat -g arc -r 1 does the scanner value increment?

As asked before but you didn't reply, what are TAPEDEV & LTAPEDEV ? What OS ? Can you backup a dir. or file using tar/cpio on the device (Tape or filesystem), being referenced by TAPEDEV ? ----- Original Message ---- From: S SURESH <suresh.sambana@ril.com> To: ids@iiug.org Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 9:32:57 PM Subject: Re: RE: RE: Problem while taking backup [8524] Hi all the parameters are properly set its not showing any error Its taking long time now than before After waiting for some time im killing the process ******************************************************************************* Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. ________________________________________________________________________________ ____ Bored stiff? im able to take tar backup in that dir
TAPEDEV /data/informix/archive/ril1_tape
LTAPEDEV /logicallogs/clogfile
ok. Before killing ontape process, can you check:
1. check onstat - to see if any thing unusual e.g "Archive Blocked" , "Block
Checkpoint" etc.
2. onstat -u | grep -M- and see if Read / Write counts are changing
3. Does Online log file record message about Level 0 started ?????
4. What about logical logs ? Are they being backuped up ?
