Large character fields core dump

We're running Informix SE (5.00.UC2) & SQL (4.10.UD2) on a Data General Aviion and having some problems whenever we have large character fields in our tables. We generally can't use character fields greater than 250 or so characters without running the risk of having it core dump... (This happens moreso on tables with multiple joins) So we've wound up creating a bunch of seperate fields to hold long character descriptions. (Which is such a kludgey way of getting around the problem and causes no end of problems) This was happening on our old platform (AT&T 3B2/700) so I don't think it's likely to be a hardware or OS problem...
