Ontape restore using gunzip

Hello all,
HPUX11.11
IDS9.40FC3
I have created a level 0 archive to disc using gzip via a piped file.
I have changed the onconfig to include the piped file /tmp/backup and
run ontape -s -L 0 with
cat /tmp/backup | gzip -c /backupdir/backup.dat running on another
screen.
All works fine and dandy. The backup completes without any errors.
Now however I wish to restore the database so here is what I am
trying....
gunzip -c /backupdir/backup.dat > /tmp/backup then on the other
screen....
ontape -r
All appears fine,,,but nothing is happening?!?! I confirm to continue
the restore and answer no for backing up the logical logs.....but it
just seems to hang....when I go into the screen with the unzip it has
finished (i.e. is back to the prompt)
What am I doing wrong fellas?
Thanks in advance.

The engine thinks it is a TAPEDEV, so has "rewound" and "closed" the pipe.
Just do the
gunzip -c /backupdir/backup.dat > /tmp/backup
on the screen where it finished
