select only from table

Table permissions:
I would like to be able to select data from tables which have
had synonyms created in one database which doesnt contain any data
for various tables in many other
databases. I have a user which does not have the CONNECT priviledge on my
database containing the synonyms. How can I change the table level
permissions i.e. on the synonyms so that the user cannot delete or
update the tables referenced by the synonyms.
If I revoke the priviledges from public on the database containing
the synonyms and then grant select on the specific table to my
user, the user cannot connect to the database using dbaccess.
If I then grant connect to my user the user can select rows and
delete and update.
Am I missing something fundamental here ?
Connect privelidge allows select, insert, update and delete.
and yet if I do the following sql.
select systabauth.grantor,systabauth.grantee,systabauth.tabid,systabauth.tabauth,systables.tabname
from systabauth, systables
where systables.tabid=systabauth.tabid.
the tabauth column shows the select (s-------) permission and the
grantee is my user.
I can't create stored procedures as the data is accessed through 3rd
party software but uses the login of my user to connect to the
database.
