ROWID Question
Posted in 1996
I'm thinking about using ROWIDs in a program which scans a given table, looking for newly inserted rows, and was hoping I could just keep the last ROWID seen as a starting point (rowid > :last_rowid). Question: Are ROWIDs for newly inserted records always higher than the highest existing ROWID in the given (non-fragmented) table ? If records are deleted from the table, will Informix reuse their old rowids for new inserts ? What if delete all the rows from the table ocasionally? I'm not planning on storing the rowid values, just using the last one found for the next scan of the table. I understand (from Informix documentation) that ROWIDs may not be sequential, and that fragmented tables have some peculiar properties. Because of replication that is taking place on this table, I'd prefer to stay away from trigger based solutions. BTW, I'm running Online 7.1 under Solaris 2.4. Thanks in advance for the help. -- Peter Sylvester MITRE Corp. Bedford, MA (peters@mitre.org)
