IDS 10 installation files
Posted in 2012
A developer of software-inventory tools wanted IDS 10 media to test discovery of legacy customer instances, since it had vanished from the IIUG member area. Art Kagel explained v10 is out of support, IBM had the developer edition pulled, and licensed customers can't legally pass on their install media. Fernando Nunes noted customer licences are perpetual and suggested approaching IBM via the partner/OEM channel. No download source was found. The thread then drifted into IBM's support lifecycle, with Pradeep Kutty (IBM) citing the 5+3 model plus Continuing Support for 7.31, 9.4 and 10.

Hi. I'm looking for IDS10 installation file. I know that previously itwas available in Member Area. Any idea hot to get it right now? Cheers
Informix 10.00 is out of support, so you cannot get it any longer. Art Art S. Hi Art. Yes, I know that it's out of support. I'm working for a company which creates software and hardware inventory tools and I need to add support for IBM Informix. I've already multiple versions of 11.X in our lab but I need to get 10.X. I thought that maybe IIUG users can provide me ISO image or something. Cheers

Any new use of V10 is a shot in the feet, and apparently that's your (or better saying your final customers) situation. If you have a specific customer requesting V10 I'd suggest you try to understand why, and maybe work with IBM to show them why not. Regards and good luck in your porting work. -- Fernando Nunes Portugal http://informix-technology.blogspot.com My email works... but I don't check it frequently... --20cf30334ebb5a8c2f04c5918d25
Hi Fernando. I need to support 10.X because our customers still use it in some legacy setups. It's not my job to suggest them upgrading to 11.X, I need to provide them possibility to track the instances and make inventory. We provide support for many "out of support" software technologies such as Oracle 7 and 8 or Microsoft Windows NT, so why not IDS 10.X? Cheers
But that would be in violation of their software licenses and since it is out-of-support, you cannot get it from IBM either. Similarly, IBM asked IIUG to remove the 10.00 developer's edition download when support for it ended. That's my point. Art Art S. Hi Art. OK, I see your point. Still that's a little bit strange for me, but thanks anyway.
Art, I think we are missing his point... The tools tracks the installed software... And the customers are free to use the version 10 for as long as they want as long as they bough it and they're not exceeding the usage they bought. So, if I understood correctly, the OP want to have IDS 10 installed so that his tool can "discover" it. It's not that the tool uses Informix.... That how I understood it after last email. And if that is the case, rest assured, the customers can use V10 for as long as they want... The licenses are perpetual... Naturally they will not have support, or will have limited support through additional fee. In this particular case, I personally wouldn't see a problem if IBM provided V10 to the OP. But I believe that would need to be handled by the partner organization. Fernando, I didn't say that users who are licensed on 10.00 cannot continue to use their software. AFAIK the license is perpetual as you indicate. What I said was that a licensed users cannot provide the installation package to the OP for his organization to user for testing that their product can work with Informix v10.00. That would be in violation of their license IB. Certainly if IBM wants to provide the OP with a copy of 10.00 for their use in this way it is free to do so, whether for free or for a fee. That's their choice, and as you say the OP's company would have to work with the partner and OEM teams to get that. Perhaps someone should alert Gary Proctor to follow up if he feels there is an opportunity here. My point that he cannot get it from the IIUG or from a customer stands, though. Art Art S. Your circumstances are exactly what I'm referring to in posts which I recently placed in this forum! Users should be given the option of upgrading to the next supported version from the one they're currently on and not be obligated to upgrade to the latest version!
He is free to upgrade to 11.10, 11.50, 11.70, or wait for 12.10. But since this was obviously an eval I assumed that the OP is looking to test the latest. Should I have assumed he was illegally using a time limited evaluation copy in production? Art Sent from my Galaxy S®III"FRANK J. There's concern about how long each version will be supported and what should constitute a new version, revision or fix. Just because new features are added shouldn't mean that a new version has to be released and older versions will no longer be supported. It's like the "Feature Creep" syndrome where for example, every time Apple adds a new iPhone feature, they want you to buy a new phone. Users should enjoy a minimum of 5 years support, or more, for any particular product they've purchased. A lot of effort and money goes into stabilizing a system without having to worry about loosing support. Upgrades can be expensive, something always seems to break when upgrading!
IBM's official position as it was described to me, is that they will provide full support any major release for five years from the first release date and at least one year after the product is no longer available for purchase. As of now, you can purchase extended support for "unsupported" versions which includes down system support and access to existing fixpacks that you may not have installed. Art Art S. Greetings! Just to clarify - Informix has a 5+3 support model. It is 5 years of regular support from release date before the product goes end of life followed by 3 years of extended support which offers full fledged defect support. Informix (Only) also has an offering called Continuing support that runs through Sep 2013 that offers non defect support for 3 specific code lines - 7.31, 9.4 and 10 that are EOS. Details can be found over here - http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21439094 If anyone has any questions on the support options, please feel free to ping me directly. Regards!
