A stored procedure is a way of applying business rules in the database engine rather than via the front end tool. In short, it's a way of doing some of the work you used to do in (for instance) 4GL at the database engine level. See "CREATE PROCEDURE" and "EXECUTE PROCEDURE" for usage; chapter 8 of the Guide to SQL: Reference December 1991 (Part No 000-7118) has details. >2: Does informix have RE and event triggers yet ? What is "RE". You can set constraints across tables (e.g.: prevent a row from being inserted/updated in a child table without a corresponding parent row from existing), and apply triggers to INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE events. >3: How many copies of the same database name can Online cope with? One per instance of OnLine. There may be aliasing and other rules that might make it more. >4: How long would it take to get a SE db tranferred to an ONLINE (including > installation & set up of the engine itself) Loaded question. Here's a loaded answer: Relatively short. >5: Is there any way that an Informix program can be stopped in mid run, told > to display a message and await a keystroke before continuing from the > moment it left off (ie to display a system message without buggering up > the screen) ? Sure. See PROMPT, RUN, and a couple more complicated ways. If you mean interrupted from OUTSIDE THE PROGRAM (ie, have root send a message to a terminal running 4GL), it gets trickier. >6: What the hell is the difference 'twixt SE development and SE > Runtime (apart from loadsa $$$) ? I don't know, but you local sales rep does. ============================================================ Dennis J.
