Informix 5.0 Question

We are currently running Informix 5.0 on an IBM RISC 6000 box. We have 4GL programs calling ESQL/C functions and within the ESQL/C function we have prepare, declare and open sql statements. When the program is executed we get -201 from the open cursor statement. Does anybody out there have any solutions to this problem other than compiling and linking ESQL/C functions using c4gl.
