Thanks. -Hari WELLLLLLLL... Yes, both versions can exist on the same machine at the same time. Yes there can be active instances of both running concurrently. No they cannot share data in the sense of both instances accessing the same disk space, ie databases/tables, concurrently, but then NO TWO INFORMIX INSTANCES CAN DO THAT. Not even if they are the same version. Ingres could do that, have two instances with separate shared memory and buffer caches and tuning accessing the same databases for different classes of clients that either needed different tuning parameters or needed to be prevented from fighting over buffers and other resources. Ingres did this with a distributed locking mechanism not unlike Oracle's distributed lock server for clustering. Informix does not use an external lock manager, one of the reasons it kicks ass over Oracle, so this is impossible. If all you mean is can you fetch data from both instances with the same client process, then the answer is sure. Several ways. You can take advantage of Informix's remote database capability including built in two phase commit or you can open separate connections to each engine and deal with the data coming back from both separately or combine it in your application. You can even have multiple threads, one or more connected to either or both engines, simultaneously. The possibilities boggle the mind! Just depends on what you REALLY need to do. Art S. Kagel
