I am looking for some information from the community, as to experiences running the following: Multiple Production Instances on the same hardware Informix Production Instances on a VM I am basically looking for any pros & cons. I have installed and run Informix on a VM, as have I ran multiple instances on hardware. However, this has only ever been in a Test or Development environment. I want to know is it advisable to run with these scenarios for a Production environment. I am posting this on the Linux-Informix forum, as we would only ever be running on RHEL. Thanks in advance for any assistance on this. Regards, Andrew Clark
Multiple instances: You have to be careful about resource contention between instances. That is the only gotcha. If both/all instances are accessing the same storage, for example, you have to be careful that the access patterns are different (day-vs-night, read-vs-write intensity, etc.) or that you calculate that the total IO requirements do not swamp the storage capacity or force cache thrashing on the subsystems. VM Multiple instances on VMs are very much like multiple instances on a single machine at the root OS except that you have some control, via the VM's resource management features, over what resources each VM has access to - how many CPU cores, how much memory, etc. The main downside to running IDS on VMs is try for all databases - IO under VMs is awful. In my own testing for a client I could not get close to the parent system's IO throughput even with a single VM running or even in aggregate across all multiple VMs. Art Art S.
