Binary compatibility of Informix 5.0 on same architecture ?

Hello ! I am trying to use a database created at a customer site on our development system. They are both based on an Intel 486 system and they do run Interactive UNIX as well as Informix 5.0. I got a copy of the database files on tape and put it on my development system to look at those. However, nobody can access these files, except the user "informix" himself. What do I have to do to allow access to the files for other users ? I know how to do it in general, but for these files, it fails ! Both system share common users, like "support" with even the same user id. However, this user can't access the database on my development system, too. So, where is the problem and what can I do ? I need access to these files from my development platform as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give !
