A note from someone else started me down the right path. What actually happened was that
when the IP address was changed, the admin was also prompted for the machine name. Up
until that time, the machine had been called "Machine" (for example). At the prompt,
though, they entered "machine". That network segment is not yet on DNS, so everything has
to be in /etc/hosts, but /etc/hosts still referred to the name "Machine". Anytime I tried
to use isql or dbaccess, Informix checked and found that it couldn't trust "machine", so
I'd get a -956 error. The problem with ODBC was a similar issue.
