Do you CREATE the database with an european or french code? What is the result of the following statement? SELECT * FROM sysmaster:sysdbslocale dbs_dbsname dbs_collate sysmaster en_US.819 xyz_german de_DE.819 If you get en_US.819 for your european database, then you MUST use host variables or clients using host variables for the non-ascii characters. If you get de_DE.819 or maybe fr_FR.819, or fr_FR.8859-1 then you can use client software with non-ascii characters. To set the entry, set the DB_LOCALE and CREATE a NEW database. It is not possible to change the entry. If you restore a database from tape, the entry will be overwritten by the tape. Martin
