two separate versions of IDS on same UNIX machine?

Hi everyone. Another one of my basic questions.....I did poke around a little for an answer before posting :) Very simple question..........Oracle allows for multiple version of it's database engine to be installed on the same UNIX (or windows) BOX at the same time.....Does Informix IDS also allow this? Specifically could I have IDS 9.4 FC9 as well as IDS 10 FC9 installed on the same AIX 5.2 box? I would assume that the kernel parms for IDS 10 would suffice for IDS 9? I was thinking (hoping really) to have 2 completely separate IDS versions 9.4 and 10 with completely separate database files/databases on the same AIX 5.2 machine...does Informix support this? Thanks. Will
just make sure that $INFORMIXIDIR is different for the two instances. ------------------------------------- Madison Pruet, STSM IDS Replication Architect = "WILL LANDSTROM" = <willlandstrom@ya = hoo.com> = To Sent by: ids@iiug.org = ids-bounces@iiug. = cc org = Subj= ect two separate versions of IDS on = 12/02/2008 08:29 same UNIX machine? Will, Providing that your version of 5.2 supports IDS 10 ... Basically for each instance, you need to define separate environs for : INFORMIXDIR PATH ONCONFIG and within each onconfig, they should each have a different SERVERNUM as well as it would be a good idea to direct the two following items to separate paths so that they do not step on each other: MSGPATH /usr/log/informix/message.log # System message log file path CONSOLE /usr/log/informix/console # System console message path Of course, in the sqlhosts file, both instances need to be listening on different ports. I find it helpful to use a shell menu that is executed from /etc/profile that "prompts" the user to choose which instance to use (therby setting up all of these environs) as well as use a quick shell program that the user can call to switch back and forth. I can provide samples of these shell scripts if so desired. Yes , You can install different IDS version on seperated directory. Hi, in addition to the other answers: By using the environment variable INFORMIXSQLHOSTS (set to the absolute path name of the respective sqlhosts file), you can separate the two instances quite completely. By having two separate sqlhosts files for two separate IDS instances (different or same version), you can manage two running instances without them knowing of each other. Also clients (local or remote) can use separate sqlhosts files. That way a client of one IDS cannot "scan the sqlhosts file" for other IDS instances ...
