Check out http://www.tpc.org/ - interesting, but no final answers of course. :If Informix were a bit bigger I would say no conflict - but then they might :get too big and run into the IBM situation (RS6000 competing with AS400). Where they should long ago have prioritized the RS6000, but a cash cow is allways hard to get rid of. :There is still an issue there of where do you use the resources to best effect. :If I can sell the fortune 500 (who are going to by 300 licenses each) big :machine SW at $50K each vs going the small business route where I'm going :to sell 30,000 at $5K all told - which do you think I'm going to opt for? :(say 100 (of the 500) * 300 * 50 ==> 1,500,000K vs 150,000K) - just a :guesstimate and maybe way off base, but then I'm sure you'll tell me if :I am. :-). Of course :-) Simply change 30.000 to 300.000 and the numbers are the same. And considering that Informix has allready sold over 750.000 licenses (from my information from Informix about a year ago) even 300.000 isn't that high a number. Again with the growing need for server based databases maybe we should perhaps talk about more than a million? Unrealistic? You, or anyone, may judge. : Anyway - where are you going to apply these resources? Both places. And there is an added benefit in that the fortune 500 also need many small scale solutions, so this may be a win/win. Also never forget that the small guy coming up often have an easier situation than the big buy trying to go down. Allways upscaling as competition comes in at your low end has failed missarably for many in many industries. There is sometimes a limit to how far you can scale up and still retain a significant market, while the small guy is chasing your back all the time. May be we will see Compaq delivering enterprise servers for the big databases one day?
