Query Accelerator - Web Applications

Folks - This isn't strictly an Informix question, but I thought there'd be many people here who had some direct Informix experience: We have a large-ish IDS/Solaris database, consisting of relatively few tables which contain in excess of 12+ million records each. You can consider the data to be similar to a personnel database, i.e., name, address, city, state, zip, phone, etc. We are interested in delivering high-speed semi-freeform query access to a web application, i.e., we need 100 - 200 millisecond-range performance on queries that logically "AND" any combination of these properties ("where city = c and state = s and name contains (n) and zip = z"). In addition, we may need some tokenized access to the name, so that I could find "Robert Jones" if I only knew "R Jones", or could find "McDonald's Restaurants" if I only had "McDonalds". I'm pretty aware of the kinds of parsing, tokenizing, and indexing I could do with IDS 7.30, but don't believe it will deliver the kind of performance we need.. Has anyone used any commerically-available query optimizers (such as OMNIDEX that use optimized in-memory indexing, for example) or any other search or search engine technology to provide these kinds of capabilities? I would also offer that I am not familiar with Informix's Advanced Decision Support or Parallel Query features. Many thanks! -- Richard C. Richard, The type and speed of query access you describe is exactly what the OMNIDEX database search engine is designed to do. It delivers instant access to any number of fields, columns or properties, including name, address, etc., against any number of data records. You can locate words anywhere in a name using full or partial words. For example, you could use "R* Jones" to find "Robert Jones" or even use "mcdonald*" or "restaurants" to find "McDonald's Restaurants". We have thousands of customers and millions of users using this advanced indexing technology, and we would be happy to provide you with more information.
