Hi Maria! Yes there are significant performance benefits to be had by storing the blobs in blobspaces. According to the OnLine Administrator's Guide, when blobs are stored in tablespaces they are read into the buffers before being edited just like other non-blob data. If they are in blobspaces, this is not done, thereby reducing the time needed to read and edit blob data tremendously. I've known places where they implemented the blobs in tablespaces and got poor performance; one day the dba decided to try storing it in a separate blobspace and it's been that way ever since due to the increase in performance so generated. There may be other reasons (or contra-reasons) for storing blobs in blobspaces, but they escape me at the moment (the manual is too far away from me now). If you have a chance, read the OnLine Administrator's Guide; it can enlighten you on a number of things. I'm also currently reading another book published by Informix Press called INFORMIX-OnLine Performance Tuning by Elizabeth Suto. Get yourself a copy; it's worth it.
