I think it would have been much better if HP or EMC would have bought Informix. Unfortunately in 2001 those companies where not as much interested in software than today. I think that both companies would have done a much more professional marketing for Informix than IBM does today and they would perfom TPC benchmarks with IDS. Unfortunately we have no time machines yet and have to live with the situation. There have been a lot of promises regarding Informix Marketing from IBM in the last months and you know: hope dies last -:)
I have been working with data managenent for many years and Ionly involving with Informix for just 1-2 years , one world: just LOVE it! Its performance, reliability, simplicity,... tremendous features you can hardly find in this world elsewhere! I feel extremely confused , disappointed, sad,... about the treatment to Informix done by its Owner today! You know what? One of my friend wanted to look at Informix from IBM product list(WEB site) a couple days agao, NO Informix there! You can only go to DB2 link , No other choice! He called IBM "contact number", replied "sorry , we do not know..., you can search it .." ............... Informix was married to a WRONG husband! Divorce would be the only choice to get better life! I do not understand why SUN, HP... missed the opportunity, what a loss! "Performance, Reliability, Simplicity..." this really describes IDS best. Are those the main reasons why Cisco decided to favour IDS instead of other commercial or free databases ? Just can't imagine that Cisco did choose IDS because of the ongoing advertising and marketing campaigns for IDS from IBM -:) So there have been other reasons to favour IDS. Don't know if Cisco has been an Informix shop in the past, but I did not hear the name in conjunction with Informix. I also could not imagine that IBM didn't try to push DB2 into this account. Funny, that DB2 with all the benchmarks it wins, with all the autonomic features it has, with all the advertising done for it, with the large market share it has, with the untouched scalability options and ease of use, didn't make the race -:) Why is IDS better suited for this ? If someone from Cisco reads this newsgroups, it would be interesting to know why they preferred IDS instead of others ? It is important to focus on the strengths of the IDS product and "Performance, Reliability and Simplicity" are definitely some of the strengths of IDS. Others are scalability, hardware gentle architecture, smooth version transistions and outstanding replication features/performance. This is the message that IBM marketing needs to get out in the market in form of marketing campaigns and events. And when I say in the market, I don't mean only the existing Informix community. There are a lot of good opportunities for IDS, but the vendor needs to articulate the strengths of the product in order to open those opportunities. It could not be that customers like Wal Mart have to advertise IDS because IBM is not doing it. This is a little bit antic from my point of view. As has been pointed out by others, it is usually the application that drives the database selection. Not sure of this particualr case.

On mainframe and AS/400 maybe. On Linux and UNIX its penetration is, in my considerable experience, negligible.
