Dynamic SQL in stored procedures?

Does anybody know of any acceptable ways to build SQL statements dynamically within stored procedures of Informix Dynamic Server v7.2x? SPL is extremely limited and doesn't seem to provide any clear or attractive ways of doing this. I know stored procedures are intended to be used for relatively basic, atomic processes which may be executed many times. However, I'd like to know whether there were any good ways to build e.g. SELECT statements dynamically within them. Cheers, Charles.
