UPDATE STATISTICS, good?

I have several stored procedures that use "update statistics for procedure..." to update some other procedures that this procedure need to reference. That works fine in INFORMIX 7.1.1, but crash database in INFORMIX 7.1.3. So, is UPDATE STATISTICS really important, or I can ignore them? BTW, is this the INFORMIX bug? Jack
