The ON-Bar utility will be available with the 7.21 release, and will be
device-independent. It will not care what the characteristics of the
actual tape are (wound, re-wound, compressed or whatever) because it will
use your choice of storage managers. ON-Bar will manage the Informix
side of the archive process, and the XBSA server will handle the storage
media. As an additional bonus, the command set is simple and the
error handling is very thorough.
In the meantime, you should be careful how you manipulate the archive
process. While it is possible to do nearly anything (this is Unix,
after all) as the archive gets more and more complicated Informix will
have a harder and harder time understanding--and thus supporting--your
system. If you follow the Informix guidelines to the letter, then the
support team already knows the "boundaries", and has tools that can help
in the event of a problem.
FWIW, I've been on both sides of this issue, and empathize greatly.
I can hardly *wait* for ON-Bar.
