Is there a way to connect IUS with PERL CGI?

What (if any) connection method would I need to connect to an IUS database from within Perl CGI scripts? Is CLI the way to go? I'd hate to have to 'dbaccess' through shell scripts and munge the returns. I'm also not really interested in the Webdriver.
