RE: Software licensing again

Christine. I don't remember the person's name, this happened during a high-level presentation of 'IBM Linux strategy' in Waltham, MA, some time ago. The policy to license database servers per CPU core is crazy. With two cores, CPU (socket) is just 50% more powerful then with two separate CPU's (single core/socket) This is why it was a real relief to me, that IBM (unlike Oracle) made a smart decision not to buy additional licenses for underpowered CPU core. To charge per CPU's cores is the best way to kill IBM's own multi-core Power-5 May be, the policy 'per socket' applies only to DB2, and IBM is still going to get rid of the annoying Informix customer community -Alexey ' -----Original Message----- From: Christine Normile [mailto:Christine.Normile@us.ibm.com] Sent: Monday, March 07, 2005 1:37 PM To: Alexey Sonkin Cc: informix-list@iiug.org; Neil Truby; owner-informix-list@iiug.org Subject: RE: Software licensing again Hi Alexey - Can I ask who your IBM sales people are? We license the product by CPU or Concurrent Session. A dual core CPU contains two CPUs on a single chip and we would charge that as 2 CPUs or a minimum of 20 C/S licenses. This licensing policy does not apply to CPUs with Hyper-Threading capability. Those are single-CPU based and are charged as 1 CPU. They told me, that most IBM products (including Informix) are licensed 'per socket', not per 'cpu core' and not even per 'virtual cpu' It means, that we'll be safe with milt-core and multi-threaded CPU's expected soon -Alexey > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-informix-list@iiug.org [mailto:owner-informix-list@iiug.org] On > Behalf Of Neil Truby > > A comment from Art made us at Ardenta think about an announement on the > Informix pages of the IBM website that IBM would demand a 2-cpu licence for > each physical cpu of a certain type in Solaris boxes.
