I was waiting for some of the c.d.i. "Big Boys" to do this, but they are obviously Sleepless in Seattle. If I remember correctly, Nils said in his last post before vanishing about month ago that he will investigate this ArtInSoft and report back to group. Nils? ------------------------------------Cut-------------------------------------- Java report, May 1998, by Philip J. Gill Oracle and Partner Push "Informix to Java" Migration Database kingpin Oracle Corporation has recruited a Costa Rican-based software house as part of its effort to get Informix 4GL users to migrate to the Oracle database and Java. ArtInSoft S.A. (www.artinsoft.com) of Cartago, Costa Rica, makes a product called "RESCUE: Informix to Java", which it said automates the conversion of Informix 4GL code into standard Java source code using Java database connectivity (JDBC). RESCUE converts application logic, forms, reports, and database models written in Informix 4gl, a fourth generation language, that is the primary application development language for users of Informix Software Inc. 's relation database technology. Given Informix recent troubles, Oracle apparently feels Informix users are ripe for migration. ArtInSoft said its Rescue Studio tool. Priced at $6,780, assists professional programmers in the preparation, design, and implementation of software reengineering project, The generated Java code closely resembles the original Informix 4gl application logic, so it is fully understandable and maintainable, the company said. In addition, ArtInSoft has coded same low-level Informix functionality in Java classes, witch are shipped with the converter. ----------------------------------Cut---------------------------------- This is not the first time Oracle is going after 4gl users. Remember Oracle support for Querix? Obviously at least Oracle thinks that 4gl is The Reason for some shops to still use Informix engines, not the other way around. Not that I would fully agree, but, ' Does anybody see logic in expecting people to change engine just because they can? If they really wanted to, they could use Querix before, cheaper and faster. What impact of this could one expect to the Dynamic 4GL? And before all, is this a real product, how good the product is, and what can you do with it that you haven't been able to do before (except to use JDBC).
