Using C4GL for SCO under Linux
Posted in 1998
I am quite conservative in my technical choices and I am still using Informix 4GL + SE version 4.10 for my developments. However, I want to replace my old SCO 3.2v4 development platform by my new Linux Red Hat box, and, of course, I want to be able to compile my 4GL programs natively, using gcc on Linux. As you certainly know, the 4GL modules need to be linked with the Informix for SCO archives (lib4gl.a, libfesql.a and libnforms.a) and the SCO libcurses library, all of them containing COFF binaries created in the early nineties. I configured IBCS2 on my Linux machine and imported the /shlib directory from my SCO system. Now my .4ge programs (created and compiled on my SCO system) work well on my Linux box. This confirms that older Informix versions for SCO work fairly on Linux, after typing 3 shell instructions for Linux configuration (sometimes being conservative in technical choices may be helpful!). Gcc works also well compiling my source modules imported from SCO without any change, and generates ELF binaries for each. Things go worse in the link step, because the gcc linker cannot read symbols from Informix archives and libcurses. In fact, the nm command does not recognize the file format of the binaries (COFF format) included in these archives and libraries. It sends me "File format not recognized" for each of these binaries, which certainly explains why the linker is unable to read the references included in these binaries. In another hand, the "ar x" command succeds in extracting the binaries from these archives and libraries, and the command "file" seems to be able to recognize these binaries since it sends me : "80386 COFF executable not stripped - version 30821". I guess I am not very far from the solution, but I can't go further by myself. Could anybody help me? Thank you. Pascal Ferrari T'l.: +33 (0)1.42.96.01.63
