RE: Qwerky Stored Procedure issue
Posted in 2013
Larry reported an odd problem on Solaris 10 with IDS 11.50.FC7: an SPL stored procedure called via an API loads comma-delimited web data into a database, works the first few times, then silently does nothing with no error message — yet runs flawlessly when TRACE ON is enabled. Paul Watson suggested running oncheck -cDI on sysprocedures and sysprocplan, doubted extents or stale statistics were to blame, and asked whether the input file was truly identical between the failing and traced runs; he also noted the developer's TRACE OFF placed after RETURN is simply never executed. Fernando Nunes questioned the description, since SPL cannot read files itself. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

I am running two Sun servers running Solaris 10 and IDS 11.50.FC7. I have an interesting situation. I am starting to gather more information, but I was wondering if anyone may have experienced this and can give me an idea of what to look for. An application developer created a Stored Procedure that is called via API. It basically takes information gathered from a web site, comma delimited file, and inputs it into a database. The Stored Procedure may work once to a few times, but then it appears to not do anything, no data files processed, with no error messages. However, when we turn TRACE ON in the same Stored procedure, it works flawlessly. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Larry
No... but you got my attention... Does it open files?!...You mean an SPL procedure? With TRACE it works forever? Sounds weird... but witout any details I have no ideas... Is there a way to check the health of Stored Procedures such as oncheck with
an option or some other command?

How do you define health ? If the SPL compliles then it exists, if it
doesn't then it doesn't.
You can run oncheck on the sysprocedures and sysprocplan
Cheers

Are there any special options for checking the sysprocedures and sysprocplan?

Thank you. I will give it a try.
Do you think having a lot of extents could be the problem, or maybe the
statistics are just out of wack for the table?

Unlikely unless there is a bug.
Are you 100% certain that the file that fails in normal running is exactly
the same as the one you are running in debug mode

The developer said she just oncomments the TRACE ON and TRACE OFF statements.
Beyond that, I couldn't say. One thing that I did notice is that her TRACE OFF
statement comes after her RETURN statement, but I didn't think that could be
the issue. Any thoughts?
