cannot connect from client

I'm pretty new to this so any help is appreciated. I am trying to connect my client (pegultra10) to the server on a remote machine (pegsub). I have installed the Client SDK on the client but don't know what else to do. I have copied the sqlhost file from pegsub (the server where my db lives) to pegultra10 (the client) and have verified I can ping the machine. I have exported my INFORMIXDIR, INFORMIXSERVER and SQLHOSTS file variables.
