Hi users, Informix user id in passwd file on Solaris 2.5.1 / IDA 7.3 is 20. Is this correct or should it be a number greater than 100 ? Thanks in advance, Prashant ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Traditionally uids less than 100 are reserved for system type ids, so using 20 is unusual. I recommend that you use a number greater than 100. any number will do as long as the number is not used for any other id. Usually the system administrator determined the rhyme and rhythm for the numbering schema. Also, its a good idea to use the same number, the uid, for the gid (the informix entry in the /etc/group file). If you decide to change informix's uid from 20 to something else, it involve merely editing the /etc/passwd file. Immediately after the number is changed, it will go into effect. Nothing has to be recompiled, restarted, etc. If possible use an administrative user interface to change the number. When I started with UNIX 16 years ago, there were none, and we had to know how everything worked since we did it by hand or wrote our own administrative shell scripts. > > > Thanks in advance, > > Prashant > > ______________________________________________________ > Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

If you do change the uid, as outlined above, all the files etc previously owned by user informix will be owned by uid 20, which will not map to a user in /etc/passwd. You will need to run chown informix <filename> for every file and directory previously owned by informix: find / -user 20 -exec chown informix {} \\; Hope this helps, Richard.
