Re: RE: Dev server restore fails
Posted in 2017
User attempted to restore logical logs after a physical database restore using ontape -l with -t STDIO option, which failed. Experts advised that LTAPEDEV should point to a directory containing log backups, ontape -l should be used without STDIO, and the server automatically identifies needed logs without specifying individual files. One expert questioned whether -l option supports -t STDIO at all. No final resolution confirmation provided.

Hi,
If you have done a ontape -p
- Change -p to -l
- Change the filename to the filename for the logical log backup.
Regards,
David.

This is what I am attempting to do. It is based on the PROD server we have
taken over and I'm trying to replicate that.
I set LTAPEDEV to /opt/informix/log_backups
I think I then ran ontape -a to backup the log files and I see that file in
the log_backups folder.
I then ran:
ontape -r -t STDIO < /opt/informix/full_backup/1_L0_Arhive
and that worked.
I then ran:
ontape -l -t STDIO </opt/informix/log_backups/name of log file
and that failed.
I was listening to Lesters webcast and I think I might know where I went wrong
and will check in the morning.
It looks like I have the correct command to restore, but I believe I might
have an issue with my log file. I think it used the onbar command. I need to
have a closer look.
My environment uses log_full.sh instead of alarmprogram.sh
a lot of different things can go wrong here when it is being done so
differently.

And what was the error you got?
also you dont NEED the STDIO in the restore - just point at the file
Remove the STDIO on the ontape -l -t /opt/informix/log_backups/name of log file
In case you have the LTAPEDEV pointed to a directory, which seems to be the
case,
ontape -l will identify the logfiles there without any further options.(the same way ontape -a will save them automatically appended with a logno).
The only thing to prepare is the correct access rights (mode 660, owner/group
informix)
and to have either the same servername or IFX_ONTAPE_FILE_PREFIX value (which
sets the prefix of the file names).
After a physical restore, the server will also know exactly which log will be
needed next,
there is no need to point to a specific file. In a productive environment,
normally there are multiple
logs to restore, this would be very annoying to name each logfile one by one.
Hope this helps,
Marcus

I'm unsure -l option (logical restore) would support -t STDIO at all ....
