How would I go about finding the username and password to connect to a
informix database. The database exists on a Sun Solaris system. Using
dbaccess I have figured out that the username is probably public but
how do I get the password for public?

Before you buy.
Since you appear to be able to connect to the database (using "informix",
possibly), look into table "sysusers". If you find the a username called
"public" (as it appears you have), then all users that can log into the
Solaris box can connect to that database. If you cannot find "public",
then only the specified usernames may connect.
That still does not mean that they can access tables within the database.
For that you need to look into systabauth.
Better still, get an understanding of how security in Informix works by
examining the document,
Informix Guide to Database Design and Implementation at
