The solution was to have the RC script run an informix startup script as an su script. There was just something not right about the runtime environment during RC file processing on Ultrix. Setting the environment was not sufficient. Had to use something like: INFORMIXDIR=/usr/informix/ol7su - $INFORMIXDIR/bin/startup Where the startup script simply had the environment and oninit commands normally placed directly into the RC script.
