The key words in the question were '(actually a file)'. if it was
written to 'actually a tape', there would be no problem, as Ferronato
said. Writing to a file, the stdio library usually stops you at the
2GB limit - well, the fact that the pre-9.40 versions of the utilities
running on 32-bit machines are not using a version of stdio that is
aware of large files causes the trouble.

I think that most 64-bit platforms should be immune from the trouble,
even prior to 9.40. But 9.40 is where it is guaranteed (to the extent
that any software is guaranteed).
